Newspack, a new product by WordPress, will be an “inexpensive” platform for small- and medium-sized news organizations. The project is backed by Google and Ethereum development studio ConsenSys, and will have in-built blockchain tools.
Newspack’s funding includes $1.2 million investment from Google, $350,000 from ConsenSys, $400,000 from the Lenfest Institute of Journalism, and $250,000 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Newsrooms accessing Newspack will be given the option to use blockchain-based features through Civil Media, a project backed by ConsenSys. More specifically, Civil’s Publisher product, will allow newsrooms to store content on the blockchain and will be available on the WordPress platform as a plugin.
A representative from ConsenSys further elaborated:
“The plugin will also act as a portal that will walk newsrooms through how to join the Civil Registry, the hub of community-vetted and -approved newsroom.”
Still on the topic, back in August this year, the Associated Press announced it would collaborate with Civil on blockchain-based content licenses.
