Privacy Policy

Please read and understand this Privacy Policy. This Privacy Policy is subject to and governed by The Chain Bulletin Terms and Conditions and the Terms of Use (“ToU”) defined therein. This Privacy Policy only covers The Chain Bulletin Sites (as defined in the ToU).

Information Gathered

We gather two types of data about our users: personal information and tracking information.

Personal Information

Personal information is provided by users when posting comments on articles or when subscribing to newsletters. Personal information gathered from posting comments includes e-mail address and screen name. Personal information gathered in connection with subscribing to our newsletters may include name, employer, job title, employer address, e-mail address and phone number.

Tracking Information

This information consists of both individual and aggregated tracking information and is gathered using “cookies”. A cookie is a small data file containing information, such as a user’s login name, that is written to the user’s hard drive by a web server and used to track the pages visited.

We use cookies to:

  • Compile aggregate data about site traffic and interactions to offer better site experiences and tools in the future. We may also use trusted third-party services that track this information on our behalf.
  • Enhance site performance and facilitate certain site features.

You can control your browser’s settings regarding cookies by selecting “Internet Options” or “Preferences” in the menu bar of your browser. This will allow you to prevent your browser from accepting new cookies, have your browser notify you when you receive a new cookie, or disable cookies altogether. However, because cookies allow you to more easily navigate websites, you may prefer to leave them turned on. If you are accessing the internet through an alternative method, such as a mobile application or third-party content distribution service, you understand that you may not have the ability to disable cookies, depending on the specific access method.

Cookies We Use

  • The cookie wordpress_logged_in_[hash] is used to indicate when you are logged in, and who you are. This cookie is maintained on the front-end of the website as well when logged in. Here [hash] represents the value that is obtained by applying a specific mathematical formula applied to the username and password. It is to ensure that the input values are safe, and no one can access these data using the cookies as it is difficult to ‘unhash’ the hashed data.
  • The cookie wp-settings-{time}-[UID] is used to customize the view of your admin interface and the front-end of the website. The value represented by [UID] is the individual user ID of the user as given to them in the users’ database table.
  • WordPress also sets a cookie named wordpress_test_cookie to check if the cookies are enabled in the browser, and to provide appropriate user experience to users. This cookie is used on the front-end, even if you are not logged in.
  • The cookie wordpress_sec_[hash] provides protection against hackers and stores account details.
  • The cookie itsec-hb-login-[hash] is created by the WordPress security plugin iThemes Security and ensures the integrity of the website.
  • The cookie __cfduid is used by Cloudflare to identify trusted web traffic.
  • The cookie _ga is used by Google Analytics and registers a unique ID used to generate statistical data on how the visitor uses the website.
  • The cookie _gat is used by Google Analytics to throttle request rate.
  • The cookie _gid is used by Google Analytics to generate statistical data on how to visitor uses the website.
