A virtual plot of land in the popular play-to-earn NFT game Axie Infinity has been sold for a record price of 550 ETH, or around $2.3 million, the company said on Twitter on 25 November.
The virtual plot of land in question is classified as a “Genesis” type — which Axie Infinity describes as extremely valuable and rare — that is located in the center of the game map and is capped at 220 plots, out of 90.601 total in existence. The game world of Axie Infinity, called Lunacia, consists of a 301 x 301 square grid with each section representing a tokenized plot of land that players can buy, sell, or rent.
The popular NFT game allows players to earn tokens called Smooth Love Potions (SLPs) — that can be sold for cash or exchanged for other tokens on exchanges — by defeating the monsters in the game. Different kinds of the so called Chimeras can be found around the world, with the most valuable appearing in the Genesis plots that are strategically at the center of Lunacia, which could explain their value.
It is not the first time that such virtual plots of land have been sold at such high prices, with nine plots of land in Axie Infinity being sold for 888 ETH back in February. Earlier this week another blockchain-based game, Decentraland, saw one of its plots being purchased for around $3 million worth of MANA tokens by investment firm Tokens.com.
